This book gives a remarkable insight into the history of a remarkable club. In its pages we can follow not only the fortunes of the club itself but also the momentous social change during the more than a hundred years of the club’s existence. From the handwritten minutes of 1908 through the triumph at Lord’s in 1985 to the present day the club has been a source of pride for the community of which it is such a central part. This is the story of generations of Freuchie men and women who have loved cricket and loved their club. It is both a salute to the past and a promise for the future.
SYNOPSIS
From the Club’s early beginning to its centenary year in 2008 many photographs, memorabilia, scoring books, cups, trophies and other items of interest have been accumulated. It is unfortunate that with the passage of time some records of the club’s history have been lost with many more not surviving the rigours of inadequate storage facilities. However all the minutes of the club survive including the first one dated, Monday 17th April 1908 which is reproduced on page one. While the following pages are but a snapshot of the club’s history, all records still extant are noted and are now safely preserved in suitable archival storage and, subject to the club’s conditions, will be available to any who may wish to further delve into the club’s history. Sadly not all the early photographs are fully named and some of the cups are not in pristine condition but the life and progress of the club through the years is there to be seen and enjoyed.
By any standard the club’s history is a success story not only because of success on the pitch but also through the dedication and enthusiasm of members, players, patrons, supporters, sponsors and the village itself. From the first pavilion, a small marquee provided by a patron, to a modern pavilion with bar, lounge, function hall and purpose built scorer’s box on top of it is no mean achievement. The park, which at its southerly end is a football pitch in the winter and additional car parking in the summer is a fine and treasured feature in the village and one which has survived two world wars.
That dedication and enthusiasm from club members has also been to the fore in the preparation of this archive and particular mention must be made of the help willingly given by club secretary John Anderson, David Christie, Bob Bond and John A. Thomson while not forgetting all the others who have contributed to it. The book entitled “Freuchie Cricket Club 1908-2008” is, in it’s 231 pages, a pictorial history of the club. It covers most aspects of the Club’s development and rise to fame as the only Scottish village cricket team out of 639 British entrants to win the National Village Cricket Championship in 1985 and should appeal to, not only cricket lovers, but to readers of all interests. It’s centenary in 2008 marked another landmark in the Club’s history and, while fortunes may rise and fall, Freuchie Cricket Club continues to be an important player in Scottish cricket. The downloadable excerpts gives but a glimpse of the book’s contents but provides an accurate appetizer of it.
