Junior Section April Newsletter

The new cricket season is upon us and over the winter there has been some exciting developments within the club and especially the junior section, which will assist in developing our junior players. These developments are detailed below together with details of key dates during the forthcoming season.

1. We are at present working on launching our website, (www.freuchiecricketclub.com) which we hope will become the main focal point to keep members and friends up to date with what is happening within the club. While the website is under construction please keep an eye on the club’s “blog” (www.freuchiecricketclub.com/blog) where information will be posted. The website will contain such information as fixtures, results and match reports as the season progresses. We hope to have it up and running during May 2007.

2. Freuchie Cricket Club is a participant in Cricket Scotland’s Youth Development Programme called TopClub. TopClub is a means of assessing the quality of a club’s junior section and the commitment of the club to the safety, well-being, development and enjoyment of its young members. Further details of the scheme can be found on Cricket Scotland’s website, our own website and the club notice board. We were awarded the initial level, “Active” award, last season. We aim to develop as a club and to progress through the next two levels and be awarded both “Approved” and “Bronze” levels by May 2007.

3. We have five new qualified coaches at ECB Level 1. Congratulations to Craig (Mickey) McMurdo, Scott Gourlay, Jock Wallace, Max Brown and Stuart Gibson. As a club we now have two coaches at ECB Level 2, eight at ECB Level 1 and three at Introductory Level. As required under TopClub all the coaches have been checked via Disclosure Scotland. Certainly this will lead to another improvement in our coaching performance allowing youngsters to be coached in smaller groups.

4. We welcome our overseas players who will assist with coaching. You will be introduced to them as soon as possible.

5. An exciting development this year is the introduction of an U11 hardball team, which will be playing throughout the summer. We will also be running an inter cricket team together with our usual Kwik Cricket, U13, U15 and U17 teams. In total we have arranged 54 junior fixtures/tournaments this year. Fixtures will be available on the website within the junior section and on the club notice board. A Copy of the list is also included with your registration form.

6. Cricket Scotland will also be running a Summer Training Camp at Freuchie, week commencing 23rd July. The times are 9:30 to 12:30 for U12’s and 13:30 to 16:30 for 12 to 17 years of age. More details will be posted on the website and the club notice board nearer to the date.

7. Training commences on Friday 20th April 2007 at 18:30. Membership for juniors will again be £5 for the year. Surely a bargain! Registration will take place at the first training session. Please complete and return to the coaches as soon as possible. If you have any friends who would be interested in playing cricket please bring them along to future nights, as all player will be made welcome at the club. Parents/guardians/friends are also welcome to join as Social members for £17 a year gaining access to the club during the whole year for a friendly drink and a blether.

As you can imagine running the junior section requires a lot of input and as the saying goes “many hands make light work”. There are many roles we are looking for help with, such as coaching, team manager, and scorer. Help with training can be arranged for all these wishing to take up one of these roles. We always need help with transport to/from games or maybe of interest to “computer buffs” we would love someone who would be interested in assisting running the website and someone who would like to assist in writing match reports and press releases. If you are interested in helping in any way please get in touch with myself or any of the committee or coaches.

We are looking forward to an exciting season especially if the weather is kind. The Coaches, Committee and helpers hope you have an enjoyable time coming along to training and competing in what we feel is a competitive fixture list. Please remember to sign up to our emailing list to help us keep in contact and keep up to date on freuchiecricketclub.com.

Yours Sincerely

Chris Brett

April Newsletter

On the playing front, last year was just tremendous. We won the Scottish Media Indoor Six-a-Side tournament at the start of the year, the Firsts won Scottish National League Division II with a game to spare and the Seconds gained promotion from East League Division II.

Our own Scott Gourlay was named Scottish Club Player of the Year.

We had some amazing batting performances – notably 326 against Falkland to better what looked like an invincible performance from Falkland’s Aussies.

So what about this year? Opening bowler Robbie Mutch is back with us after a good season at home in South Africa, while our other overseas player will be Jason Seng, a twenty-year-old batsman from Brisbane. Two new senior players have joined us – Sanjay Rakshit, a top order batsman and wicketkeeper who’s been with Dunfermline this last few years, and Scott Galloway, another young gun who was with Perthshire last year. He’s been honing his skills in Australia over the winter; welcome back to a (chilly?) Scottish spring, Scott!

The troops are off on a pre-season tour in the North of England this weekend, with a home friendly against Rossie Priory on 21st April and the first league matches on 28th April – Firsts away to Penicuik and the Seconds at home to Murrayfield-DAFS. The first Village Cup game will be away to Kintore on 27th May; the 2007 Fixture Card will be available in the next few days.

It’s pretty amazing to think that we will be competing at a higher level than any other team in Fife, while our Seconds will be facing sides that our Firsts fought against not all that long ago. Can we keep it up? We’ll certainly be giving it our best shot. SNCL Division I, ESCA Division I, Scottish Cup, President’s Trophy, Village Cup – lots to see. Come along and give us your support.

All this, and never a word about our Juniors. Our hard-working Junior Committee has been arranging, coaching and wrestling with the things procedural that are so much a part of modern life. Arranging? No less than fifty-four fixtures for the year. Dave Christie’s tearing his hair out. Where can he find wickets for the best part of thirty Junior games? Dave’s concerns are real enough, but we all know that this is where the future of our Club lies – we must do all we can to get the kids out on the park. Just take a walk up to the park on a Friday evening and take a look at the numbers at practice. Is there anything you can do to help us?

Away from the park, there’s lots going on. Our Sponsors are supporting us as always, and we’ll be proudly carrying the ‘Kettle Produce’ logo on our shirts this year. Sponsors Day will be on 9th June, when we’re at home to Forfarshire.

Helped by John Thomson of Roundtrip Solutions at Freuchie Mill, we’re working on a website so that we can communicate with the world at large (not to mention the world at Freuchie) and do a bit more to give recognition to our sponsors. It’s not yet fully-fledged, but John’s doing his best to educate your secretary in the art of blogs. Talk about old dogs and new tricks! Go to www.freuchiecricketclub.com/blog

The Club will be supporting Freuchie’s Gala Day on 22nd June.

We are always looking for new members – players especially – but all ages are welcome. Player subscription is £30 (said to be bargain of the year), Social Members £17, Senior Citizens and Juniors £5. Talk about bargains – quite apart from enjoying the facilities of our fine clubhouse and supporting a great team, Senior Members get a ‘pairty’ in January – a dram when you come in, lunch and an afternoon’s entertainment – all included in the membership fee? Can’t be bad! Visit the Clubhouse, call John Anderson on 01337 857 292, or e-mail secretary@freuchiecricketclub.com

Remember too that the Clubhouse is available for members’ functions, so in addition to our wintertime Prize Bingo Teas (and Patsy threatening to organise steak pie darts and dominos events), this is a great venue for your own parties and celebrations – join us!
