That’s Better
We went down to Dunfermline in a mid-week game, but Saturday saw the First team at home to Arbroath United and a marked recovery from the previous week’s debacle against Watsonians. It didn’t look too promising at one stage, despite Robbie Mutch having nailed visitor’s opener McGill for a duck in the first over. Arbroath’s batsmen rallied and were 120-odds for 3 after 25 overs. However, our bowlers eventually sorted out plunderers Ritchie, Johnston, Spink and Gilmour, while batsmen 6 to 11 amassed only 23 runs amongst them for a total of 207. Wickets were shared around, with two for Mutchie, three for Jason, two for Gibby and one each for Scotts Birrell, Galloway and Gourlay.
Our batsmen put in a workmanlike shift with Jason 38, Robbie B 22, Alan Wallace 13 and Scott Galloway 17, but the win was sealed by Gour, stroking the ball around with his usual elegance for 36 not out, and Jock Wallace with a thumping 61 not out. These and a fair sprinkling of extras saw us to 208 for 4, twelve points and third in the league. You can pick up the league information at the Lloyds TSB Scotland League First Division 2007 webpage.
Meanwhile, the Twos were having a tough time against Watsonians. Decimated by call-offs, we had three players from the under 15s. They mustered an excellent 209, which included a 59 from Graeme Christie, but that just wasn’t enough. Captain Coo said he was ‘proud of his bairns,’ literally the case for son Dale, who was our best wicket-taker with three. The Twos are now third bottom in ESCA Division 1, but just a wee bit of luck would see them moving up the table.
Sunday and Village Cup, away to Kintore. Batting first, Freuchie had 30 from Robbie Birrell, a duck from Steve Rowley and 20 from Blair Forrester, but the Wallace brothers took over at that point with 102 not out for Alan and 80 not out for Jock. With Gour’s 9 and a heap of extras we had 276 for 4, but on a less happy note, one of the Kintore bowlers stopped a Wallace drive in the most painful possible way and had to be taken to hospital. That sort of thing usually gets little sympathy from the other players, but this one was no laughing matter and we hope he’s made a full recovery. Someone has pinched my score sheet, so I’m short of detail, but the Kintore reply was 134 plus extras, Robbie Birrell chief wicket-taker with four.
The coming weekend has the Firsts away to Drumpelier, the Twos without a game due to the Glenrothes CC Fifty Year Celebrations. The following Saturday (June 9th) will be our Sponsors’ Day, when we’re at home to Forfarshire.

U13 Freuchie vs Stirling County – Wed 23rd May
Match Report By: Neil Millar
Stirling: 98 for 2
Freuchie: 81 all out
Stirling travelled to Freuchie for the second meeting of the clubs in two evenings, the under thirteens hoping to follow the fifteens with a win. Stirling batted first and after an excellent opening over from Liam Kelly the opening batsmen began to score a bit too easily. The batsmen hit out until being forced to retire at 20 and 21 respectfully. The first wicket came at the end of the 15th over when Rory Brown bowled Stirling’s Jamieson (1). The second and only other wicket was gained when Robert Osborn held a good catch off the bowling of Shane Munro in the last over of the 20. Stirling was allowed to gain their 98 for 2 off 20 overs due to a high wide count and some poor work in the field by Freuchie. This was a bad day in the field for Freuchie compared to the very high standard that had been set in previous matches.
Freuchie went into bat with high hopes of being able to chase down the Stirling total. Alistair Brett started hitting out well until being bowled LBW in the third for 6. Liam Kelly then joined Cameron Millar in the middle and began very well, hitting four 4s before retiring on 22. The bowling from Stirling was in good form taking three quick wickets, leaving Freuchie a bit to do when they lost their 5th wicket for 60. After Liam retired, Cameron Brett and Ross McMurdo were the only batsmen able to put up any resistance to the Stirling bowling, with Cameron able to gain 8 and Ross 6. The pressure really mounted on Freuchie, but confidence was still high after a further 2 quick wickets and the score sitting at 77 for 9. Optimism still flowed as Liam rejoined the match. All looked well with Liam starting his second session just as he had finished the first with a 4 of the first ball. Unfortunately, Liam was not able to continue in this manner and was bowled the next ball for a grand total of 26 for his night’s work. The match was won by Stirling as Freuchie were only able to make 81 all out in the 17th over.

U13 Broomhall vs Freuchie – Thu 24th May
Match Report By: Neil Millar
Broomhall: 61 for 7
Freuchie: 101 for 3
Freuchie travelled to Broomhall for their ‘Spirit of Cricket’ cup game after rain postponed the earlier planned meeting. Following the disappointment of the previous night, everyone hoped for a return to the good performances of previous matches. Freuchie won the toss and elected to bat first, opening with Liam Kelly and Robert Osborn. While the bowling from Broomhall was very good, the batting of Liam was again able to cope with the pressure and he gained another four 4s to retire on 30. However, he would not be able to return under the rules of the Cup. Liam was backed up well by Robert who managed 12 before being bowled out in the 12th over. Greig Birrell(1) replaced Robert and while he looked comfortable facing the bowling he was able to get off the mark before being bowled out in the 14th over. Grant Horsburgh(5) made a great start as well hitting a 4 before being run out by a great bit of fielding. Shane Munro was next in with instructions to hit out, which he took to heart, very quickly running up two 4s and a total of 12 before being given LBW while going for another big hit. The last two Freuchie batsmen were Alistair Brett and Ross McMurdo. Alistair managed 10 not out, while Ross managed 1 off the two balls he faced in the last over. Freuchie collectively batted very well gaining 72 of the 103 runs from the bat and a further 10 runs by some excellent running up of byes.
The problems of the previous night must be put down to a “bad day” as the fielding and bowling returned to a more expected high quality. Liam Kelly started very well with his first over being a wicket maiden. Liam was backed up by Shane Munro bowling his first over for the loss of only one run. Both Liam and Shane bowled extremely accurately and produced figures of 1 for 6 off 3 overs and 2 for 8 off 4 overs respectfully. Alistair Brett was brought on and he also bowled well, taking his first wicket in his second over with a final tally of 1 for 14 off 3 overs. Robert Osborn was the best bowling figures when he was able to take 2 wickets for 5 runs off his two overs. All other team members were given an over each, with all being very economical thereby keeping the run rate down to less than the five per over required to claw out a victory. Cameron Brett was able to bowl a wicket maiden over when given his chance. Freuchie never looked to be in any trouble once the first four bowlers were able to keep Broomhall down to 27 runs after 10 overs. This was an excellent result and showed the character of the team, especially after the disappointment of the previous game. This victory was very much a team performance with all the players putting in a very good performance.
Freuchie now have to take on Kinross in the next round.
U15 Freuchie vs Broomhall – Sun 27th May
Match Report By: Paul Kelly
Freuchie: 140 runs for 4 wickets
Broomhall: 94 runs for 5 wickets
Further success for Freuchie’s U15s, with a good performance against visitors Broomhall. Freuchie opened the batting, but within the first over rain had stopped play. Robbie Wright (31 runs, retired) and Gordon Mutch (5 runs) were the openers in a re-shuffled batting order. Mutch fell to Howis and was replaced by Fraser Hurndall (31 runs, retired). Jack Meiklem (0 runs) came in to replace Wright, who had another strong performance, but was bowled by Ward. Jamie Blair (21 runs, not out) replaced Hurndall and remained at the crease for the rest of the overs. Liam Kelly (2 runs, LBW) and Shane Munro (0 runs, LBW) were both unfortunate to be ruled out. Robert Osborn (7 runs, bowled) and Grant Horsburgh (7 runs, not out) brought the batting total to an impressive 104.
Freuchie’s bowling and fielding were equally as impressive as their batting. Fraser Hurndall (0-25) and Liam Kelly (2-16) opened, with Kelly taking two important wickets in Howis (22 runs) and Ward (17 runs) with both looking capable of retiring. Jamie Blair (1-13), Robbie Wright (0-11), Robert Osborn (0-8), Gordon Mutch (1-8) and Jack Meiklem (1-1) all bowled well with Blair, Mutch and Meiklem taking wickets. It was a good all round team performance with Shane Munro keeping wicket well and Ross McMurdo, Grant Horsburgh and Simon Pfeffer all playing their part in keeping the runs down. Extra overs were added on at the end to give Freuchie’s Simon Pfeffer and Ross McMurdo a turn in the crease with McMurdo hitting a couple of nice shots.
This coming week, sees the U15s at home to Kinross on Wednesday 30th May.

Junior Match Reports
U15 Stirling vs Freuchie – Tue 22nd May
Stirling: 69 runs for 9 wickets
Freuchie: 70 runs for 2 wickets
Freuchie’s U15s made it four wins in a row with a comprehensive victory at Stirling County’s impressive new ground. Stirling batted first and with Freuchie’s bowling and fielding of a high class they struggled to a total of 69 runs. Top bowling performers were Fraser Hurndall (one wicket for 2 runs, including 3 maidens), Dale Cowan (3 wickets for 11 runs), R Wright (2 wickets for 12 runs), Jamie Blair ( 0 wickets for 12 runs), Gordon Mutch (one wicket for 10 runs), Alastair Brett (2 wickets for 8 runs including a wicket maiden). Freuchie’s fielding was top class with the highlight being Fraser Hurndall’s one handed diving catch to remove Stirling’s top scorer Mountford.
Freuchie’s batting response was swift with the target of 69 reached in the 14th over. Freuchie’s openers of Wright and Munro got Freuchie off to a good start until Munro was bowled. Fraser Hurndall was next in and he produced a great innings to retire on 30 runs. He was soon followed by Wright who was out LBW for 16 runs. It was left to Brett and Cowan to close out the innings.

U13 Strathearn vs Freuchie – Tue 15th May
Strathearn: 103 runs for 5 wickets
Freuchie: 86 runs for 7 wickets
Freuchie travelled to Docotte Park on the outskirt of Perth to face Strathearn on what was a good evening for cricket. Batting first, Freuchie were slow to get started with Robert Osborn and Shane Munro facing strong bowling. Once Shane settled in he was able to hit out nicely with four 4s before retiring on 21. Robert was not so fortunate being caught off a top edge of his third ball. Alistair Brett joined Shane and was also able to gain four 4s before being bowled for 19. Batting after, Shane and Alistair struggled under the bowling pressure and were only halted by Ross McMurdo who managed two 4s before being caught for 11. Holly Jones (1) and Lewis Pour (0) were the last batsmen in before running out of overs for a final score of 86 for 7 of the 20 overs.
Cameron Brett opened the bowling for Freuchie and was able to hold them down to 7 off his two overs. The bowling that followed was also of a good high standard with Dorothy Mackie and Alex Warren both gaining a wicket each. Rory was able to catch and bowl for the third wicket. Grant Horsburgh was the top wicket taker with two wickets, although this could so easily have been a hat trick if he had managed to hold the ellusive ball. All the players who travelled were able to have a shot at bowling as Strathearn stayed on after they had gained the victory in the 17th over.
Once again the team had performed well, but the batting from Strathearn was just to strong for Freuchie.
U15 Freuchie vs Strathearn – Wed 16th May
Freuchie: 97 runs for 6 wickets
Strathearn: 96 runs for 7 wickets
Freuchie?s U15?s made it two wins in a row with another tense last over win against a strong Strathearn side on a dull and cold Wednesday evening. Freuchie captain Dale Cowan won the toss and put Strathearn in to bat. Freuchie got off to a good start with Cowan bowling 4 overs and only conceding 4 runs for 2 wickets. Alastair Brett and Robert Osborn picked up a wicket each. The rest of the Freuchie bowlers Robbie Wright, Liam Kelly, Jamie Blair and Gordon Mutch also bowled extremely well. Freuchie?s fielded fantastically with great commitment and this was proven with three run outs. There were also some great stops from Robert Osborn, Gordon Mutch and the ?two Cameron?s? Brett and Millar.
When it came to batting, Freuchie were off to a slow start and with two of their main batsman Cowan and Kelly both back in the clubhouse for ten runs each. At this point it looked a tall order to overhaul Strathearn?s total. However, opener Robbie Wright (24 runs) assisted by Gordon Mutch (11 runs) and Alastair Brett (12 runs) assisted Freuchie close in on the target and it was left to Shane Munro and Robert Osborn to seal the win with 3 balls to spare.

The winning Freuchie U15 Team on 16th May 2007
U15 Freuchie vs Clackmannan – Thu 17th May
Freuchie: 115 runs for 3 wickets
Clackmannan: 109 runs for 5 wickets
After the previous night’s performance, Freuchie?s U15 team travelled to Clackmannan for Scottish Cup duty on a high. Freuchie won the toss and decided to bat first. Dale Cowan (0 runs) and Robbie Wright (27 runs) opened, with Cowan falling early. Fraser Hurndall was next up, making a welcome return to the team with an impressive 47 runs before being caught on the boundary. Liam Kelly replaced him and scored 17 not out with another solid batting display. It was a great batting performance from all three scoring an impressive 91 runs between them. Robbie fell to an LBW and was replaced by Gordon Mutch (3 runs) who batted well and was also not out taking our runs to 94.
Clackmannan?s reply was good through McNish, Oliver and Smith taking their score to 85. Shane Munro had to be replaced behind the stumps early on by Calum Raerie after Shane took a painful blow to the knee. All of sudden Freuchie?s score was under threat, until Hurndall caught McNish (15runs); Cowan caught Oliver (38 runs) from Kelly. Alastair Brett and Gordon Mutch continued the downfall with Brett bowling Elliott taking an important wicket and Mutch with two run outs Smith (29 runs), McPhail (0 runs) and bowled Lamb (0 runs). Jamie Blair and Robbie Wright also bowled well. Out in the field, fielding was good with Rory Brown and Jack Meiklem equally playing their part in good all round team performance.
This week, the U15s are at away to Stirling on Tuesday 22nd May and at home to Broomhall on Sunday 27th May.
U13 Dunfermline vs Freuchie – Fri 18th May
Dunfermline: 73 for 8
Freuchie: 115 for 6
Freuchie travelled to Dunfermline having not had a game for almost two weeks so were very keen to get a good start. Dunfermline won the toss and elected to allow Freuchie to bat first. Alastair Brett and Shane Munro were sent out to face some fierce bowling from Dunfermline, but both dug in to stand up to the challenge, especially Shane, who stayed in until the 16th over before being bowled for 16. Alastair was not able to hold on so long, but hit out well to get 6 after facing 7 balls before being bowled. Alex Warren was sent out earlier than normal. as he had not had a bat for many games, but was beaten by some fast bowling in the same over. Liam Kelly was then put in at number 4 and set about the bowling with some very well placed and strong hits. He managed four 4s and retired on 22 having faced 26 balls. Ross McMurdo then walked to the centre and set good early pace, but unfortunately played on to loose his wicket for 7 off 6 balls faced. Greig Birrell and then Grant Horsburgh batted well for their two runs each before being caught behind and run out respectfully. Rory Brown went in at number 8 and was joined by Cameron Millar at 9 to see out the final three overs. Rory batted confidently and was backed up well by Cameron to run up a total of 14 (Rory) and 3 (Cameron) for a final total of 115 for 6 off the twenty overs. This was a strong performance by all batsmen, with Shane worthy of particular mention for his concentration and batting over 16 overs, and Liam for his quick run rate to set up the team for its highest total of the season.
Could the team perform as well in the field as they had done at the crease was the question? The answer came in the second and third overs when first Alastair Brett and then Shane Munro took the wickets of the highly rated opening Dunfermline batsmen (the Petrie twins) for the loss of 11 runs. Shane was close to getting a hat trick in his second over but unfortunately a wide call dashed that hope. Alastair Brett had a particularly good two overs, during which he managed a 1 for 1. Liam Kelly and Cameron Brett were then brought on to bowl and here again Liam with his second ball took an early wicket finishing with 1 for 4 runs. Cameron, while unable to take a wicket did a manage a maiden over and cost 6 runs. Alex Warren and Rory Brown were next up and again the statistic read very well with Alex 0 for 4 and Rory managing a wicket with his fourth ball to return 1 for 5. Next Holly Jones and Greig Birrell bowled very economically returning figures of 1 for 13 and 0 for 7 respectfully. Lewis Pour and Ross McMurdo were next up to bowl and while neither gained a wicket, the runs were kept to a very respectful 5 and 9 respectfully. However, the finest bowling of the night can be attributed to Grant Horsburgh, who took two wickets for 6 runs in his first over, before bowling a maiden with his last. Freuchie bowled out the twenty overs and managed to hold Dunfermline to 73 runs for 8 wickets off the 20 overs.
This is an excellent result against a strong Dunfermline club on what was a dry but very cold night.
