Ouch!
This has not been the best weekend we’ve ever had. The firsts went down heavily away to Watsonians yesterday with a “nul points” score. Pretty much an all-round disaster, with the home team giving our bowlers a pasting to get to 272, then cuffing our batsmen to 149 all out. Scott Gourlay took 3 for 50 while Scott Galloway scored 41, but it all feels a bit painful at the moment.
The Twos’ game was called off fairly early on Saturday morning. People squelched around the square for a bit, but the ground was clearly unplayable.
And so to Sunday, and our first game in the ESCA President’s Trophy, at home to Watsonians. Had we read the rules? Not in time, we hadn’t, and found we had selected two or three players who were ineligible through having played in SNCL fixtures last year. However, it was far too nice a day to waste, really the first decent cricket weather we’ve had this year, so we confessed our sins and suggested that the game be played out with Watsonians given the tie whatever the result. That worked out well, with Watsonians all out for 119 and our lot 120 for 5. Sanjay knocked up a fifty (then ran himself out on 51) and a good time was had by all. All things being considered.

The New Scoring System
The SNCL scoring system has been changed to try to reward the efforts of a losing side that comes close to the winner’s scores. In the past, it has been quite common for a side to lose by the narrowest of margins, only to see a substantial gulf between the points they’ve earned and the points earned by the winner.

Junior Match Reports
U11 Freuchie vs Largo
Freuchie: 205 runs for 7 wickets
Largo: 298 runs for 2 wickets
After last weeks comfortable win against Falkland, Freuchie’s U11 team came up against a strong and well drilled Largo squad who played some great and exciting cricket. Largo won the toss and decided to bat first and they racked up a big score of 298 runs for the loss of only 2 wickets. Best Freuchie bowling performers were Cameron Brett with one wicket for 9 runs, Dorothy Mackie and Holly Jones only losing 10 runs each after their overs. The other Freuchie wicket taker was Joe Gibson. The strong winds made fielding difficult but Freuchie stuck to their task.
It was always going to be a tall order to chase down 298 runs but unfortunately Freuchie lost too many early wickets with the result they were never in the “hunt”. Best Freuchie batsmen were Holly Jones (12 runs), Greg Birrell (9 runs) and Cameron Brett (7 Runs) all who were undefeated.
Now the U11s have a few weeks until their next fixture against Dunfermline on the 3rd June.
U13 Largo vs Freuchie
Freuchie: 85 runs for 6 wickets
Largo: 108 runs for 2 wickets
Freuchie’s U13 team visited Largo with high hopes after their recent win over Falkland despite travelling without one of their main bowlers Robert Osborn. Captain Liam Kelly won the toss and decided to bat first on a very windy and cold evening. Opening the batting were Shane Munro and Greg Birrell but both were out early on for 5 and 1 runs respectively. Next up was Grant Horsburgh who scored 6 runs including a 4. At this stage Freuchie were in trouble but with top batsman Liam Kelly and Alastair Brett the run rate increased and both retired with 20 runs each. Liam scoring one 4 and Alastair three 4’s in their totals. Freuchie finally finished on 85 runs after their 20 overs.
Largo’s reply was swift and they reached Freuchie’s total with 3 overs to spare. Freuchie’s best bowlers were Alastair Brett with one wicket for 6 runs and Liam Kelly no wickets for 6 runs. Freuchie’s other wicket taker was Shane Munro with a great caught and bowled. Top fielder on the night was Grant Horsburgh who saved 5 certain “4’s” with some fantastic stops.
The U13s next fixture is against Strathearn on Tuesday evening (15th May).
U15 Freuchie vs Largo
Freuchie: 96 runs for 4 wickets
Largo: 94 runs for 5 wickets
Freuchie’s U15 team returned to winning ways in a tense tussle with Largo. Freuchie opened the batting after winning the toss. Dale Cowan and Robbie Wright were the openers with Dale scoring 21 runs before being caught and Robbie completing a great innings retiring on 30. Liam Kelly third batsman scored 8 runs and was followed by Shane Munro 4 runs and Gordon Mutch 3 runs.
Freuchie’s bowling proved to be the deciding factor of the evening with Largo’s opening three batsmen falling quickly to Dale Cowan (2 maidens) taking 2 wickets and a run out by Jamie Blair. Jamie also recorded a maiden over as well as taking a wicket. Liam Kelly, whose bowling has noticeably improved, took a vital wicket in Robertson who looked like he could go on and retire. With light fading, Largo’s Zaman retired on 33 runs. Gordon Mutch, Robert Osborn and Alastair Brett all came in and bowled well, with Alastair holding his nerve closing out the match and silencing the loud partisan Largo support.
This week, the U15s are at home against Strathearn on Wednesday 16th May (league) and away to Clackmannan on Thursday 17th May (Scottish Cup).

Two for the Price of One
Here’s some notes about the first two weekends of the season. Some access problems prevented a more timely entry for last week, said problems nothing to do with ineptitude, of course. Not much. Roundtrip Solutions parachuted their man in today to straighten out a few problems, so here we go.
Entry for Saturday 28th April would have told you this:
The Firsts won their opening Division I fixture against Penicuik fairly comfortably with ten points for the win (new scoring system) but could have been two points better off if they could have got the last two home batsmen out. Honours were shared around – runs and wickets here, runs and wickets there, with excellent contributions from both new men Aussie Jason and Scottish Scott (better watch or we’ll be calling him Bonnie Gallowa’). The scorecard is available for those of you interested in more detail and the Scotsman has an excellent article available.
The Two’s game at home to Murrayfield DAFS started well for Freuchie’s bowlers, the first two batsmen scoring 3 between them, but the visitors pulled away to a daunting total of 232. Freuchie’s batting looked a bit grim early on, the scoreboard showing 11 for 3 at one point, but Captain Coo showed he still has it in him by posting 54. Sadly, only Blair Forrester with 35 came near matching Mr Cowan’s tally, and we ended well defeated at 135 all out.
This weekend has the Firsts at home to Stenhousemuir, the Seconds away to Grange. Big event of the season too – fixture cards are back from the printers (in a tasteful shade of yellow), so get to the bar and bag yours now.
Now to the present:
Just about everybody was surprised by the course of events on Saturday, some pleasantly, some less so. Happily, the pleasure was all with our lot on this occasion, with Stenhousemuir winning the toss, electing to bat and getting all out for 74. Down Under man Jason Seng was on top again, with 5 for 25 followed by a brisk 32 runs when Freuchie went out to bat. Robbie Birrell’s 23, Alan Wallace’s 13 not out, Scott Gourlay 0 not out and 5 extras saw us through to an unexpectedly swift 12 points. Cricket Scotland have the scorecard and a photograph roundup available online.
The Twos expected a tough time away to Grange Twos on Sunday 6th May and it has to be said that they got it, although that wasn’t all down to the Edinburgh side. Cold and wet, much rain-interrupted, Freuchie got to 212, but Grange got the runs they needed in what had became a reduced-overs match. Plenty for us to feel good about, though, with a resolute fight against pretty high-grade opponents.
This coming Saturday has our Firsts at home again, this time to Renfrew, with the Seconds away to Heriots. Sunday sees the first round of the Scottish Cup, but we’ve got a bye. Keep your fingers crossed for warmer weather on Saturday!

At U13 level, both Liam Kelly and Alastair Brett have played for Fife in an indoor competition and are selected for a match on the 6th May against Central U12’s. Surely an opportunity for Alastair Brett to prove himself to the central selectors!
6. MATCH REPORTS
SUNDAY 29TH APRIL – U11 FREUCHIE VS FALKLAND
Freuchie 308 runs for 2 wickets.
Falkland 265 runs for 1 wicket.
Freuchie’s Under 11 team got their season off to a winning start with a comfortable win over local rivals Falkland. This was the first Under 11 hardball fixture between the two clubs and it was played with great enthusiasm and there were a number of great performances which augers well for the future. After Freuchie captain Ross McMurdo lost the toss, Falkland decided to put Freuchie into bat and Ross McMurdo got Freuchie off to a great start with 16 runs including two fours. He was ably supported by Alex Warren who scored 11 runs, which included two fours, and another 11 runs from Grant Horsburgh, which again included 2 fours. Only two Freuchie batsmen lost their wickets. Freuchie’s final total was 308 runs. A formidable total for Falkland to chase and so it proved with Falkland finishing on 265 runs, 43 runs short of Freuchie’s total. Freuchie’s bowling performance was very strong with Cameron Brett, Holly Jones, Alex Warren and Grant Horsburgh being the pick of the Freuchie bowlers.

Falkland 75 runs for 5 wickets

Captain Dale Cowan (17 runs) and Robbie Wright (11 runs) opened for Freuchie.
D. Cowan was run out with a magnificent throw in from the wall. However, should it have been a four to begin with? Further run outs saw Liam Kelly (7 runs), Jamie Blair (3 runs) and Robbie Wright stumped. Alastair Brett (6 runs) and Edward Wade were both caught. Shane Munro (7 runs) and Gordon Mutch (5 runs) were both not out and saw Freuchie to an innings of 74 runs from 20 overs. Our bowling order saw Cowan, Wright, Kelly and Robert Osbourne each take a wicket.

Openers Liam Kelly and Shane Munro then got Freuchie off to a great start with some entertaining shots until the 8th over when Liam Kelly was caught for a score of 15. Thereafter Alastair Brett and Shane Munro put together a great partnership with both retiring undefeated for 20 and 21 runs respectively. Robert Osborn then added another 4 runs for Freuchie to end on a total of 96 runs.
