Under 13 Match Rained Off

24.06.2007 | Categori Fixtures | Groups & Sections | Juniors | News

Just like the seniors, the Freuchie Cricket Club junior matches are starting to be affected by the bad weather. The Under 13 league match against Cupar tomorrow evening (25th June) has been cancelled due to player management issues in the Cupar team and by the rain currently drenching Fife and most of Scotland. Both clubs will endeavour to reorganise the match at some point in the future.

Hopefully, the summer will start soon for real and we can get on with playing some cricket.

Cups and Complications

24.06.2007 | Categori Cricket News | Fixtures | Seniors

In case anyone is in any doubt after all this rain, both the Scottish Cup tie and the Village Cup tie scheduled for 24th June are OFF. The Village Cup tie will now be played at Crathie (in the grounds of Balmoral Castle) next Sunday. Even if the weather is bad then, the tie must be resolved that day, whether by toss of a coin, bowling at stumps or whatever. Rain-affected ties in the Scottish Cup are also normally moved to the following Sunday.

Scottish Cup rules demand that we field our strongest side. Had today’s Village Cup game been on, the Twos would have played the tie, and indeed, it’s probable that it’ll be the Twos who go to battle for us next week. However, Dunfermline, our Scottish Cup opponents, have a League match scheduled for next Sunday as well as the cup tie. How that gets resolved remains to be seen. It’s just possible that some fixture reshuffle by Cricket Scotland would see our First team free to head North for the Village Cup. We’ll try to keep you posted.

COMPETITON Under 15 League
DATE 5th June 2007
KINROSS 143 for 1
FREUCHIE 74 for 9
VENUE Kinross House
REPORTER Neil Millar

MATCH ANALYSIS

Freuchie travelled to the new facilities of Kinross Cricket Club in the grounds of Kinross House. Only three months ago there wasn’t much to see by the way of cricket facilities, but now Kinross have an attractive cricket facility. The club has worked hard to establish a ground and small pavilion, which will prove to be a tremendous asset for the future. The square still requires some work to be done, but time will allow improvements to the ground for batting as the artificial wicket still needs time to settle – it is giving a few funny bounces.

The game started with Freuchie putting Kinross into bat first. The opening bowling was accurate and efficient, but Kinross were still able to keep the scoreboard moving. The first wicket fell to a catch by Dale Cowan off the bowling of Fraser Hurndall for 16 in the fifth over. The score began to gain momentum as Kinross batmen started to build innings of 50 before retiring. The third batsman hit his fifty of the last ball to give Freuchie a target of 143 for 1 or 144 to win. The bowling had been very accurate with only four wides and one no ball; the fielders could have no complaints of their bowlers although 11 byes could possibly be avoided.

Freuchie got of to a bad start as Robbie Wright was uncharacteristically caught off his first ball and Dale Cowan was given LBW for 4 off the bowling of N Farrar. Fraser Hurndall stopped the rot for a short time, but he also fell to the bowling of Farrar for 23. Only Shane Munro and latterly Cameron Millar were able to put any significant runs on the Board with 16 and 6 respectfully. This was not enough to prevent the inevitable victory for Kinross, as Freuchie were only able to mount a score of 74 for 9 after the twenty overs.

Kinross were just too strong for Freuchie in all areas although good performances were still put in by Freuchie.

MATCH ANALYSIS

Kinross travelled to Freuchie for the second meeting of the clubs in two nights, the under thirteen?s hoping to out perform the fifteen?s with a win. Kinross batted first and after an excellent opening maiden over from Alastair Brett the opening batsman began to score at 5 runs per over. Alastair was backed up from the other end by Shane Munro who struggled initially to find his line, but eventually took the first wicket (bowled) in his third over. Kinross were batting very well, scoring with a fair degree of ease and hitting several fours and a six on their way to a final score of 157 runs for 20 overs. This is a good score and shows the quality of the batting side rather than Freuchie struggling with their bowling. The bowling was all of a good standard, but Kinross always had the upper hand with Millar catching a well-hit ball off Birrell to get the only other wicket in the fifteenth over.

Freuchie came into bat facing an uphill battle to win, but with Shane Munro being put in to face the opening bowling, along with Robert Osborn, hopes were high for a good start. Shane stuck to the task, being well supported by Robert, before Robert was bowled in the fifth over. Liam Kelly joined Shane in the middle and the score began to run on quite nicely before both players were forced to retire on 30 and 31 respectfully. Cameron Millar was first to replace Shane and batted strongly before being caught for 6 his highest score to date. The overs were running out for victory, but the target of survives the twenty overs for a score of around one hundred was looking very achievable. Ross McMurdo and Alastair Brett came into bat and look comfortable as the score reach one hundred. The last over was expensive as both batsmen managed to make dangerous run attempted and were both run out. The final score of 105 for 4 could easily have been 105 for 2 but for the cheap wickets surrendered. All things considered Freuchie gave a very good performance against one of the best teams they will face this season.

MATCH ANALYSIS

Freuchie won the toss and put Cupar into bat. Opening batsman for Cupar were hitting out nicely to get to 24 after three overs. This was to change quickly when Dale Cowan took two wickets in the fourth over with the last two balls of the over (Cupar 25 for 2). Wickets were coming regularly for Freuchie, as firstly Dale caught of the bowling of Fraser Hurndall, before Dale taking a wicket by bowling out Cupar?s fifth batsman. The Cupar opening Batsman was looking settled with a score of 11 ready to push on when Robbie Wright was brought on to bowl. With his fourth ball, Robbie managed to get his first of four wickets when Cameron Millar caught a well-hit ball. Liam Kelly was also brought on to bowl at this time and managed to get two wickets for 12 runs in his four overs. Cupar?s innings run out of batsmen when Robbie took the last two wickets in the sixteenth over to leave Freuchie to beat a target score of 51.

Freuchie felt comfortable in chasing the total of 52, putting out a change from the normal opening partnership with Jamie Blair and Liam Kelly. This partnership proved to be well able to control the opening bowlers with the score ticking along nicely until Jamie was caught for four runs with Freuchie sitting on seventeen. Alastair Brett joined Liam in the centre and managed to bring the score up to 23 before playing on for his wicket. Fraser Hurndall was then sent in to keep things moving along to ensure the win. Fraser hit out for 11 off 8 balls before being run out. With Freuchie now sitting on 39 for 3, it was decided to retire Liam (19) early to give some of the others a chance to bat. Jack Meiklem and Callum Rearie were put in to bat and managed to push to score on to the draw before Jack (2) was bowled allowing Dale Cowan to come in to see out the victory in the 13th over. Cupar were keen to give all their players a go at bowling, hence Freuchie continued to bat allowing all the remaining team members to get a turn at batting. Having completed the 20 overs Freuchie were able to score 93 for 6 with 4 early retirements. This was an excellent result with controlled bowling allowing the batsmen to chase a low target.

The batting statistics will be a bit confused as the guys were showing a good team spirit allowing others a turn even although they were not out.

MATCH ANALYSIS

Not sure which is which, but if last weekend’s collapse at Drumpelier was the “saw,” yesterday was surely the “see.”

At home to Forfarshire and hosting our Sponsors’ Day (lunch and a wee jolly as a “Thank You” to our sponsors), we were particularly anxious to put on a good show on Saturday. Forfarshire is a strong side, captained by Scotland skipper Ryan Watson, so we were worried about the possibility of him skelping the ball around our not-awfully-large park. However, he was caught by Robbie Birrell off Gibby’s bowling for 32 and Forfarshire were all out for 110 in 39.2 overs.

In reply, our opener Steve Rowley was looking good until he skied one, but his co-opener Robbie Birrell was joined by Jason, and that was the end of the visitors’ successes. Sengie finished 61 not out, Robbie 42 not out. Only downer is the news of a fairly serious knee ligament problem for Scott Galloway. He wasn’t playing and we hope he mends quickly.

Some photos from the play on Saturday.

MATCH ANALYSIS

A desperately depleted Second XI was away to Livingston, with an injured Dave Cowan compelled to play because of a whole string of call-offs and Kris Glen with the Firsts to replace Scott Galloway. Coo’s injury forced him to stop bowling after only three overs and Livingston accumulated a daunting 228.

Not what you want to see when you’re fielding ten and a half players, three of them dragged from the under 17s. But they did it! They did it! Two balls to spare, and huge batting contributions from the Coo and the always reliable Arun Trivedi. A most gratifying result, to put it mildly.
