    Round the Wicket

    Sair tae Bear

It doesn’t get much more painful than this. We finally get two games played and lose both by the tightest of margins. How often do we hear “just one ball, it just takes one ball”? Yesterday both of these balls went the wrong way.

The Firsts were at Arbroath, chasing a fairly modest target of 186, only to lose their last wicket in the last over. Twelve points to Arbroath Utd and only five to us. It leaves us still third in the league, but Stenhousemuir is right behind us with the same number of points.

Meanwhile the Twos were at home to Watsonians Twos. Had we batted out our overs, we might have had these crucial extra runs on the board, but as it was, Watsonians, batting second, just edged it. Second-last ball, I was told.

Next Saturday has the Firsts at home to Drumpellier, the Twos away to Glenrothes.

More to come, though. We are hosting the SCU Trophy Final on Sunday 5th August, between Irvine and either St Modans or Huntly, that semi getting played today, 29th July.

And more! We are hosting the two-day Under 17s International between Scotland and Holland on 9th and 10th of August. Get along to Freuchie Pleasure Park and enjoy the cricket!

    Rain Two, Freuchie CC Nil

It’s cricket we want to be talking about, not the blessed weather.

Ironically, both Saturday and Sunday were really nice days here, perfect for playing. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday had been good too. What screwed things up was 27 mm of rain on Friday, leaving our park once again unplayable, so what should have been a home game for the Twos against Heriot’s was called off on the Friday evening, while the Firsts’ trip to Renfrew was also a casualty. The  form book suggested that we might have done well there, although we’d have to admit that we are eminently capable of confounding the book (in either direction). A twelve-pointer would have seen us closing on the present league leaders, but three points for a ‘no match’ leaves us pretty much as we were.

So this weekend it’s a big one for the Firsts, at home to Watsonians, while the Twos head for Cramond, if they can conquer the traffic jams on the Bridge.

Junior Match Report – Freuchie agonisingly close!

    COMPETITON U15 League
    DATE Sun 8th July 2007
FALKLAND 73 runs for five wickets
    FREUCHIE 69 runs all out
    VENUE Falkland Cricket Ground
    REPORTER Chris Brett

    MATCH ANALYSIS

On a day when summer returned, Freuchie’s U15 side travelled to Scroggie Park to face their old rivals Falkland. Both sides were under strength due to the holidays, but produced a cracking game with Freuchie looking comfortable winners, well until the last 5 overs when the runs dried up!

Falkland batted first and struggled to a total of 73 with top scorer being T Syed who retired on 32. Best Freuchie bowlers were Fergus Black (4ov-4-runs-1w), Alastair Brett (4ov-8runs-1w), Robbie Wright (4ov-10runs), Shane Munro (3ov-10runs-1w). Shane Munro also took a great catch to remove Meikle and a great bit of fielding resulted in a run out.

Freuchie’s batting started well with Fergus Black quickly reaching 13 until he was bowled by Westland. Freuchie’s batsman kept looking to build a partnership, but every the self destruct button seemed to be pushed with 4 runouts. Only Robbie Wright, who scored 23 before being caught, batted well. Next top scorer was Edward Wade with 5 runs. Freuchie only needed 15 runs with 5 overs to go, but sadly runs were in short supply and we were bowled out with 4 balls to spare.

Some Good News, Some not so Good

For most of our members, the over-riding aim is for the Club to be playing at the highest possible level, which puts the First Eleven’s results at the top of the sheet.

Our win over Stenhousemuir at the Tryst on Saturday was therefore just what the doctor ordered. While we have been in third position in Division I for some time, those in slots four to seven were uncomfortably close behind, but this win put a slightly healthier margin into the gap. Rain-affected again, and on a pitch difficult for both sides, what must have seemed a pretty easy target of 111 Stenhousemuir runs turned out to be tough enough. We lost seven wickets in getting them, in what the papers termed “a nervy run-chase.”

Not so good was the loss of the Twos’ game against Grange Twos. We weren’t seriously expecting to make many points from this one, but what really counts is games, and this goes down as yet another victory for the weather. The game was called off on Friday evening, our pitch like the proverbial pudden.’ (“Pudding,” for those of a more refined background).

And even less good was Sunday’s nPower Village Cup game against Wolviston. All the weather forecasts said there would be no cricket that day, but we made the trip. The game was in fact badly affected, but according to the old guy who played at Balmoral the week before, “there to be won.” Combinations of two dropped catches, the call of the T in the Park sirens to some of our players and a few other things saw us fail to do ourselves justice. However, that’s the truth of most matches – if only this, if only that etc. The plain fact is that we didn’t do enough on the day.

So next Saturday, the First away to Renfrew, the Twos at home to Heriots. Better weather, please.

Cricket Scotland Coaching Camps for the Kids

Clarence Parfitt, a former Bermuda and Scotland International player, will be running coaching camps for the U13s and U18s at the end of July. All children are invited, at a small charge, to come along and receive instruction from one of the top coaches in Scotland.

In recent years many of the children, who have attended these Cricket Scotland camps, have shown fantastic improvements in their skills by the end of the coaching sessions. For many it was a turning point in their journey to mastery of the game.

Spaces will be limited and as in previous years they will inevitable go extremely fast. Best to avoid disappointment by forwarding names to Chris Brett on 01337 857024 or juniorconvenor@freuchiecricketclub.com as soon as possible.
