Cricket, or Water Polo?
It’s early Friday evening and it’s chucking it down. Again. However, the story is that tomorrow will be better, and Sunday maybe better still.
Saturday sees the Firsts away to Stenhousemuir, who have already claimed some notable scalps. Hope we get theirs this time. The Twos are at home to Grange, which is likely to be a real toughie, but so much depends on the weather. And maybe on how many of our young bloods are off to T in the Park.
Looking beyond our own boundary, so to speak, the big news of the week has concerned a proposal that there should be an immediate change to the way SNCL league positions are determined. Present ruling, introduced this year, is that rankings are based on total number of points scored, with three points to each side if a game is abandoned without a result. Carlton Cricket Club raised a petition to have placings based on percentage of possible points gained because the situation has been so heavily distorted by the number of games that have been abandoned. SNCL organised a vote, with the outcome 23 to 9 in favour of leaving things as they are for this season. That suits us, at the moment at any rate.
Sunday might be Village Cup. “Might be” because we are due to travel to Wolviston, and the word is that their ground may well be unplayable. They’ve had even more rain than us. If the game is called off, the tie will be played here on 15th July, which will be a replay of 2004. If you’re thinking about heading to Wolviston this Sunday try to get word about how things are going there. We’ll try to have the news at the Clubhouse (01337 858 226).
And talking of the Village Cup, how about this e-mail from last Sunday’s opponents?
Crathie Cricket Club
Patron: H.R.H The Duke of Edinburgh
President: John Edrich MBE (Surrey & England)Crathie Cricket Club would like to thank Freuchie Cricket Club for the very pleasant and competitive game between our two clubs at Balmoral on Sunday.
We were particularly pleased to see that Dave Christie, the great man of village cricket, still turns out for Freuchie although he did not get a chance to shine on Sunday.
We would like to wish Freuchie every success in the remainder of the competition and we hope that you have a successful season in all other respects.
We look forward to meeting you again before very long and, (in the event that you should meet the winner of the Glamorgan & Gwent section), hearing how the men of Fife got on with the pronunciation of Ynysygerwn or Ynstawe.
Now that really is in the spirit of the game.

Wow! What a fabulous piece of sportmanship.
Maybe this is the effect of having an HRH for a patron?!?
