So Did We?
Do or Die, we said.
Sadly, more of a whimper than a bang for the Firsts. A win on Saturday would have seen us in a play-off for promotion to Premier Division, but it was not to be. We fared poorly against Aberdeenshire Cricket Club‘s attack then took only four of their wickets, giving us the proverbial nul points. Meanwhile, Stenhousemuir scored ONE SINGLE POINT in their match against Watsonians, to nudge us into fourth place. The ‘Sair tae Bear’ reported against Arbroath a few weeks back is now mair sair – we lost then by a single run, when just two more would have seen us firmly in second place. Anyway, no moaning!
The Twos did better, though. At home to Holy Cross with an injury-depleted team, they held the visitors to 170 runs, then batted resolutely to reach 171. Blair Forrester’s excellently struck 71 not out was a huge part of this. Indeed, he and Graeme Christie looked totally in control for a while until Blair called for a single of a smartly driven cover drive and Graeme was run out. Had Blair been a little more cautious in his call, had Graeme been backing up better, they might have made it a six wicket victory. The main thing is that we think this is enough to keep them in the top division of the East League, but that has yet to be confirmed.

Do or Die!
This weekend sees us at home to Aberdeenshire Cricket Club. The winner earns a play-off place for promotion to next season’s Premier League. Can we do it against Aberdeenshire? Can they do what they did already this season and do it to us? Will the weather do it to both of us?
The permutations are mind-blowing. Stenhousemuir Cricket Club have the same number of points as Aberdeenshire and us, but slightly fewer bonus points. If we were to be washed out and Stenhousemuir play and win, they would go through to the play-off, while if they played and lost, Aberdeenshire would go through because they beat us earlier in the season. If all of us were washed out, Stenhousemuir could still go through because they beat Aberdeenshire once and the other match was rained off. I think.
Hey, all we have to do is win on Saturday!
And congratulations to Watsonians, who had the league tied up last Saturday.

Roll Up! Roll Up!
All the Fun of The Fair at Freuchie Cricket Club this weekend!
The Firsts are away to Forfarshire tomorrow, knowing that winning our last three games would see us with a play-off place.
The Twos are at home to Livingston.
Last Sunday’s battle between Irvine and Huntly for the SCU Trophy was rained off, but they’re coming back to try again this weekend. Once again, better weather, pleeze.

A Wee Extra
We’ve just updated an earlier post to include an extra photograph of the all conquering Freuchie team who saw off Forfarshire on our Sponsor’s Day match back in sunny June. Have a look to see our heroes who done us so proud!
Thinking about it… wasn’t the weather much better back then?

Just What the Doctor Ordered?
“Hello Central. This is Doctor Jazz.” (Slight modification of Mr Morton‘s lyrics. Check him out). “I would like to order a game for a patient who already suffers from hypertension.”
“Central can offer you a game in which the home side bats first, looks like it might stage a batting debacle but rallies to a reasonably respectable 199 for 8, then works its way through the opposing batsmen until numbers 10 and 11 are at the crease, needing thirty runs for victory with about five overs left and run rate to date around three an over. At that point, we offer a string of (hard) missed catches, a skied drive into a tree to give the visitors four runs on what would otherwise have been a catch and a few edges to get them within eleven runs of victory, then the last man clean bowled. How does that sound?” “Great. That’ll send his blood pressure as high as the one that went into the tree.”
So what do you want? Walk-overs or competitive matches that could go either way until late on? It wasn’t easy to watch, but the result puts us tied in second place with Aberdeenshire (scores identical) and tied on points with Stenhousemuir, who have 16 bonus points against our 19. Just what the doctor ordered for us, if hard lines on visitors Drumpellier who had begun to look like snatching victory from the proverbial.
The Twos were at Glenrothes, who were too strong for us, scoring 153 when we could manage only 98 in reply. Our bowlers didn’t have the greatest of days and too few of our batsmen got going, but as we’ve said before, that’s not all that bad against a club that was a first team opponent not all that long ago.
Do come along on Sunday 5th to watch the SCU Trophy Final between Huntly CC and Irvine CC, which will be held at our ground.
