Alan Wallace reports:
For the third consecutive season Freuchie Cricket Club is competing in the Cricket Media Super Sixes Indoor Six-a-Side tournament at Cricket Scotland’s Cricket Academy at Ravelston, Edinburgh. In 2006, at the first effort, Freuchie won the overall tournament and followed it up in 2007 finishing third or fourth.
This year, Freuchie’s first games were on Friday 25 January 2008 versus Preston Village and Murrayfield Dafs. In the end Freuchie won both games comfortably, although if the opposing batsmen had shown a little more composure, the outcome might not have been so conclusive.
The man of the match for the Preston Village game goes to Scott Galloway and to Scott Birrell for the Murrayfield Dafs game.
The next stage of the tournament will involve Freuchie playing the same teams once more on Friday 22 February 2008. Because Preston Village beat Murrayfield Dafs, as long as Freuchie beat Preston Village they are guaranteed to qualify for the semi final/final which will be played on Friday 7 March 2008.

The Late January Update
The Old Folks’ Day last Sunday went with a bang, with a haggis exploding as Dave Christie’s ‘ready slight trenched its gushing entrails bright,’ but no damage was done. (If anyone gets picky about the spellings in that quotation, I have to say it’s not how I’d have rendered it, but that’s how Mr Collins’s 1955 edition had it when I went to check the spelling of ‘’slicht’). The dancers quick and quicker flew, the singers sang, the players played, the piper hotched and blew wi’ micht and main (I have to get off this Tam O’Shanter metaphor) and a good time was had by all. Thanks to all who came, but especially to the entertainers and to our hard-working Ladies’ Committee and all their conscripts, Harry ‘The Peeler’ Barclay, Denis ‘The Waiter’ McLean, and Dave ‘Bang Bang Haggis’ Christie.
The Scottish Media Indoor Six-A-Side tournament starts this Friday (25th January) at the MES Sports Centre at Ravelston, Edinburgh. We won it two years ago, but lost in the semis (I think) last year. Each team plays twice each night they are there, our fixtures on this opening night being against Preston Village and Murrayfield DAFs. More details from the SNCL website.
And on Saturday 2nd February, we’re all going to the Dogs, with a Race Night in the Clubhouse. More details to come.

More Pics, More Captions
How about captions for these, taken after Monday night’s storm? (Allusions to the Bowling Club trying to nick our covers would be in poor taste). Manufacturers Jetmarine are impressed. “Must have been some storm,” they say, “we’ve never seen anything like that!” Freuchie just blows you away, eh!
One from Our Man in Edinburgh (oor Pete): “FCC knew the game was up when their cover was blown ….”
Alan Wallace wants to know weather the insurance will cover this …. Oooouuch!

Caption Competition?
Who’s got captions for these fine shots from the Cycle Race?
David Warwick suggests “Lee - I thought we said Hi-Vis jackets, not shorts!”
and “I’m ready if no one else is - where’s the starter?”

What Next?
Christmas over, Ne’r'day sobered up from (no problem in my case), back to work for the non-wrinklies - Oh yes! That’s what’s next! Senior members are all invited to the annual Seniors’ Day Burns/Entertainment/Late Lunch Day, in the Clubhouse on Sunday 20th January. (I get to say ‘wrinklies’ because I am one). Jim Hepburn will be there as MC, - isn’t that right, John? - (a wee in-joke) and there will be stories, music and songs, with dancing by The McKays. And haggis and neeps and tatties. And maybe a wee dram? Whit mair could a body ask for?
Beyond that, there is to be a Race Night on 2nd February and a Sportsman’s Lunch on 3rd March, both promising to be good fun and good fund-raisers. We’ll have more about them in a few days.
Meantime, does anyone have photographs from our Cycle Relay Race? There seemed to be quite a few people around with cameras and we’d like to get a few of the best shots on to this blog. E-mail them to secretary@freuchiecricketclub.com
Magnificent Umpteen
That title was going to be ‘Magnificent Sixty Eight,’ reflecting the number of riders who competed in the Tour de Freuchie, our sponsored cycle race on the last Saturday of 2007. Then you begin to think about all the people who made big, big contributions without getting on a bike, who sponsored, who made and served soup, who made stovies, the marshals, the supporters - it’s a list that goes on and on, and it’s an awful lot bigger than sixty eight. So it’s Umpteen.
Seventeen of the planned twenty teams made it to the starting line, and all but two of these completed the eight lap course. The weather could hardly have been kinder (for the riders at least, marshals finding it chilly at their static stations) and there were no accidents (that anyone admitted to).
Scott Munro’s team ‘Catch Us If You Can’ was a clear winner with a total time of 1 hour 50 minutes and 26 seconds, a full ten minutes up on Scott Gourlays’s team, ‘The Kebab Shop,’ at 2 hours and 36 seconds. The others ranged from 2 hours and 2 minutes to 2 hours 34. Fastest lap was 12 minutes 54 seconds by Scott Munro, who also scored the second fastest at 13 minutes 12. Max Brown won the Best Team Name prize with ‘The Roving Cyclepaths.’ (Seemingly somebody somewhere has copyright on ‘raving cyclepaths’).
We have a spreadsheet that shows each team’s start, finish and race times, plus all the individual lap times. There’s a copy on the Notice Board in the Clubhouse, and it is shown below.
Financially, the day was a great success. Entry Fees and sponsorships committed came to £2,710, the raffle and disco brought in a further £475, while prizes and costs came to £306, so we were £2,879 up on the day. Fantastic! It’s maybe unfair to single out individuals when so many people worked so hard, but credit has to go to Alan Wallace, who first suggested the idea and was the main organiser, and to Graeme Christie, who brought in £509 worth of sponsorship on his own. His grandad’s mower refurbishment is assured!
A great day in every way, and a great big thank you from Freuchie Cricket Club to every one of the Magnificent Umpteen.
