Rabbie would have loved it
Tam o’ Shanter?
No “rigwoodie hags wad spean a foal” here, but a very pleasant and very happy company of our older members. And more than “ae winsome wench and wawlie.”
This was Senior’s Day on 17th January, the Club’s gift back to its Senior Citizens. No less than five “winsome wenches” in the shape of The McKays highland dance troupe, with compere Jim Hepburn playing the pipes. A dram for everyone as they came in. “Inspiring, bold John Barleycorn” (or whatever you preferred).
We’d better not extend the Tam o’ Shanter theme any further, before we get to “Auld Nick in shape o’ beast,” or something.
Och! Why not! “Loud resounded mirth, and dancing.”‘ Didn’t it just. Dancing from the McKays as already noted, mirth from Jim Hepburn’s cracks and Margaret Finlay’s recitations, music from the accordion of our own John Crawford, songs from Grace Black, all backed by keyboard player Walter Ireland. And of course, Jim “screw’d the pipes and gart them skirl / Till roof and rafters a’ did dirl.” (No “open presses,” thank goodness).
Then lunch – soup, haggis, neeps and tatties, shortbread and a cup of tea, a little more dancing and a present for every guest. What a Deil. Sorry – that Tam o’ Shanter thing again – what a Deal!
Seriously – what a credit to our committee and our members. The soup-makers, the tattie peelers and tattie bashers, the provider of the haggis, the waiters and waitresses, the dish-washers – everyone. This was a day with a real buzz about it. Who says community spirit is dead?
