All the sessions are on Sundays, all the times 12.00 to 14.00, the actual dates 4th, 11th, 18th and 25th of March. Subject to weather (will the park ever dry?) outdoor practice will begin on Tuesday 10th April, with every Tuesday and Thursday evening from then on. Sessions start around 18.30.

We’re hoping for a couple of friendlies, one home, one away, on 14th and 15th April – watch this space and our Facebook page for details.

Known to all of us as ‘Nivvy,’ he had been in poor health for a long time.

A member of our victorious Lord’s team of 1985, Nivvy had a prized scalp in clean bowling one of opposition Rowledge’s openers, but it’s probably true to say that every one of our older players has a Nivvy story. One of the favourites is of the early days of our involvement in the Village Cup, when each tie included a cricket ball throwing contest. Participants were allowed a run up to throw (slightly down hill) towards the school dyke. Nivvy was standing down at the dyke and throwing the ball back – up hill, without a run up …..

Some of the other Nivvy stories are possibly less suitable for publication, but certainly no less flattering. Very fast on his feet, he was no mean bowler and had one of the strongest, flattest throws in the club.

We will remember Nivvy, not just with respect, but with affection.

There will be a player’s meeting in the clubhouse this Sunday morning at 12.30. We have still to decide whether we play in the East League or the Strathmore Union. The issues surrounding this are complicated and the consequences of our decision far-reaching. Falkland faces the same problems as us, and Paul Watson of Falkland will be joining our meeting. All players should make every effort to attend.

Alex and Gaston played with us in the 40s and 50s, Alex captaining our Second Eleven for many years. Dave Christie pays tribute to both, remembering Gaston ‘as the quiet man who did many things for the club without members knowing how they had come about or who had paid for them.’

Winnie, widow of Alex, died on 18th September, and Daphne, widow of Gaston, on the 30th. It was Daphne who performed the opening ceremony of our new pavilion in June of 1973.

Our sympathies go to both families.

Our park is water-logged. The outfield and the square are covered in puddles. Rain has seeped under the covers. Every time there’s a glimpse of sun, it’s quickly followed by another shower. Dave can’t even get on to the ground to make remedial attempts.

It’s near-certain that tomorrow’s finals will have to be cancelled, but we’ll try to keep you up to date with posts on our website and on our Facebook page.

You can expect this to offer some really exciting cricket and a great chance to see some of Scotland’s best young players in action. The first semi final will be between Carlton and the winner of the quarter final between Greaves Clydesdale and Ferguslie. This will start at 11am, with Huntly against Barclay’s Wealth Grange (last year’s winners) at 1.30pm . The final will take place at 4pm.

This competition is now in its second year. There were 33 entrants – 50% up on last year – and it’s great to see more clubs getting involved in serious competition for this age group. We only wish we were not just hosting the event, but competing ourselves. Our key target in Freuchie is to bring more of our large number of very young players through to taking their cricket seriously in their mid to late teens. Now, that really would be something to get excited about!
