Captain’s Corner

Unfortunately after all our hard work at training through the week we were beaten by the weather on Saturday.

This week we welcome our local rivals, Falkland, to Freuchie after a 2 year absence. I’m sure it will be a very competitive game, but all rivalries will be put aside after the game so we can enjoy a few beers together. We look forward to a big crowd attendance for this derby match.

I’d like to welcome Gregor Morris to the club, Gregor hails from St Andrews and has just finished a gap year playing cricket in Australia. He will make his debut for the 2nd XI on Saturday at Penicuik.

The club is sure to be busy on Saturday night as there is a Race Night and Freuchie Football Club is having their end of season drink. Anyone wishing to attend the Race Night is very welcome to come along and join in.

Odds and Ends

We are working hard to have a couple of overseas players this year and hoping that things are just about settled. A pro has been identified and we’re at the crossing i’s and dotting t’s stage. Scott Galloway took on the job of finding a suitable pro, and crossing eyes has been just what he has been doing. What a job. Anyway, fingers crossed as well as eyes. If all goes well, we’ll have South African fast bowler Mario Saliwa and New Zealand batsman Dan Harper. Just the bureaucratic hurdles to come.

Membership subscriptions are due, so if you haven’t renewed yours …..

Courtesy of our sponsor, Black Light and the labour of our own Jock Wallace, we have shiny new disco kit, so look for sparkling discos from now on. Any apprentice DJs out there?

Cricket Scotland demands that all clubs playing in the senior leagues have a groundsman qualified to Level 1, and while Dave Christie has Level 2, it makes sense to have some back up. So Dave McIntosh is registered for an Institute of Groundsman course this month. Good on both Daves.

Race night this Saturday. Get up there and back a winner!

Tour de Freuchie 2008

Another great day. Expect a fuller report in a few days, but the main facts for now -

We had fifteen teams

Fastest race time was 1 hour 48 minutes 52 seconds

Fastest laps were 12 minutes 16 seconds and 12 minutes 20 seconds (from the rider of laps four and eight of the winning team)

These times compare with last year’s figures of 1 hour 50 minutes 26 seconds and fastest laps of 12 minutes 54 and 12 minutes 20, again from the rider of laps four and eight.

So our competitors are getting fitter ….. Well, some of them are. And chaps and chapesses, if you want to succeed in this event, you have to do something about this guy who is turning in these super-fast laps ….. A few drawing pins? A can of Instarust for his chain? Or just make him ride the bike that our unfortunate team of juniors was using – it wouldn’t be quite true to say that they spent more time trying to fix it than they did cycling it, but that’s not far off the mark.

And chapesses? A team of ten ladies had the fifth best start to finish time of the day at 2 hours and 34 seconds, although it has to be admitted that they completed five laps against the others’ eight. They went round in pairs, and if it looked a bit on the leisurely side at times, just be aware that at least two of the lap times beat some of the men’s.

We think we raised about £2,900 for our fund for Junior (and senior) coaching in 2009. Details to come. That’s a great, great effort from everyone, from organiser Alan Wallace to all the riders, all the marshals, the couple sitting in the car tracking times and shouting desperately “what number was that that just came in?”, the ladies with the soup and the pies, the spectators – everyone.

Kiddies Party

Yesterday was the annual Kids Xmas Party here at Freuchie Cricket Club. The youngsters enjoyed themselves immensely, especially as the sound of Jingle Bells raised the roof of the clubhouse and sounded the arrival of Santa, who had travelling down to Freuchie from the North Pole. Thank you Santa.

The new Club President made his first public outing and speech to a captivated audience, well the youngsters could well have been captivated by Santa! President Paterson thanked everyone for their hard work and wished the members and their families a very Merry Xmas.

It was just unfortunate that the sound system broke down during the children’s games, leaving Faye Dick to do a grand job of belting out the songs at the top of her voice like Ethel Merman on speed.

At this point we’d like to quash the rumours circulating that President Paterson reacted just like Elf (video below) when he was told that Santa would be coming to the party. No truth in that rumour at all!

Finally, Santa has passed on a message to say he hopes all the children are being especially good as he doesn’t want to see anyone from Freuchie moving from the nice list onto his naughty one!

Press Release: Tour de Freuchie

Freuchie Cricket Club will be ushering in their 2009 season next Saturday afternoon with their annual winter sponsored cycle race to raise funds for the cricket club and other clubs in the area.

Teams of 4 will compete against the clock in a relay race for 2 laps each of a 4 ½ mile circuit around the village. The record time from last year’s race was 1 hour, 50 minutes and 26 seconds for the winning team to complete the total distance.

Cricket club first team captain, Robbie Birrell, who was out on his bike practicing last weekend, told us:

“It’s a great way to get all the family out in the fresh air, work off some of those extra pounds gained over Christmas and get ready for the Hogmanay celebrations. Some of the cycling can be a bit tricky at this time of year on wet roads, but we’ve got marshals all round the circuit to keep everyone safe”.

The Fife club, who are the only ever Scottish cricket team to win the UK Village Championship at Lords, managed to raise over £3000 at last year’s event. This year they are also inviting other local sports clubs to join the race and use it as their own fundraising opportunity too.

Vice captain, Dave Cowan, who was also out getting in some training last weekend, added:

“There was a great party atmosphere last year with families out supporting the cyclists, having something to eat and drink, and a disco in the evening to award the prizes. We are hoping to repeat the same success again this year and would welcome anyone from the village or further a field to come along and join in the fun”.

The race starts at midday next Saturday 27th at the rear of the clubhouse on Muir Road, Freuchie. There will be refreshments available all day and anyone who wants to enter either as a team or as a club, or come along to the evening disco should contact the event organiser Alan Wallace on 07872 379224.

Archie Cowan Trophy

Archie Cowan, father of Dave, grandfather of Dale, was one of Freuchie Cricket Club‘s notable characters. To quote the late Andrew Grant, famous both for wicket-keeping and for recitations “Ye aye get somethin’ special frae Airch, supposin’ it’s juist the wey he gets oot!” There was more to Airch than that, though. He scored his runs and took his wickets, and you always knew when he was on the park. The side had a more confident feeling when he was playing. And a few more laughs.

Sadly, Airch is no more, but as you will have gathered, is warmly remembered. Mary and the family put up a trophy in his memory, to be contested each year between us and our old rivals, Falkland Cricket Club. The extent of the various league and cup involvements for both clubs has made it difficult to arrange this season, but we are delighted to say that it’s on for this Sunday.

One o’clock start at Freuchie Park, Sunday 16th September. A Last Hurrah for the 2007 season. Be There!

April Newsletter

On the playing front, last year was just tremendous. We won the Scottish Media Indoor Six-a-Side tournament at the start of the year, the Firsts won Scottish National League Division II with a game to spare and the Seconds gained promotion from East League Division II.

Our own Scott Gourlay was named Scottish Club Player of the Year.

We had some amazing batting performances – notably 326 against Falkland to better what looked like an invincible performance from Falkland’s Aussies.

So what about this year? Opening bowler Robbie Mutch is back with us after a good season at home in South Africa, while our other overseas player will be Jason Seng, a twenty-year-old batsman from Brisbane. Two new senior players have joined us – Sanjay Rakshit, a top order batsman and wicketkeeper who’s been with Dunfermline this last few years, and Scott Galloway, another young gun who was with Perthshire last year. He’s been honing his skills in Australia over the winter; welcome back to a (chilly?) Scottish spring, Scott!

The troops are off on a pre-season tour in the North of England this weekend, with a home friendly against Rossie Priory on 21st April and the first league matches on 28th April – Firsts away to Penicuik and the Seconds at home to Murrayfield-DAFS. The first Village Cup game will be away to Kintore on 27th May; the 2007 Fixture Card will be available in the next few days.

It’s pretty amazing to think that we will be competing at a higher level than any other team in Fife, while our Seconds will be facing sides that our Firsts fought against not all that long ago. Can we keep it up? We’ll certainly be giving it our best shot. SNCL Division I, ESCA Division I, Scottish Cup, President’s Trophy, Village Cup – lots to see. Come along and give us your support.

All this, and never a word about our Juniors. Our hard-working Junior Committee has been arranging, coaching and wrestling with the things procedural that are so much a part of modern life. Arranging? No less than fifty-four fixtures for the year. Dave Christie’s tearing his hair out. Where can he find wickets for the best part of thirty Junior games? Dave’s concerns are real enough, but we all know that this is where the future of our Club lies – we must do all we can to get the kids out on the park. Just take a walk up to the park on a Friday evening and take a look at the numbers at practice. Is there anything you can do to help us?

Away from the park, there’s lots going on. Our Sponsors are supporting us as always, and we’ll be proudly carrying the ‘Kettle Produce’ logo on our shirts this year. Sponsors Day will be on 9th June, when we’re at home to Forfarshire.

Helped by John Thomson of Roundtrip Solutions at Freuchie Mill, we’re working on a website so that we can communicate with the world at large (not to mention the world at Freuchie) and do a bit more to give recognition to our sponsors. It’s not yet fully-fledged, but John’s doing his best to educate your secretary in the art of blogs. Talk about old dogs and new tricks! Go to www.freuchiecricketclub.com/blog

The Club will be supporting Freuchie’s Gala Day on 22nd June.

We are always looking for new members – players especially – but all ages are welcome. Player subscription is £30 (said to be bargain of the year), Social Members £17, Senior Citizens and Juniors £5. Talk about bargains – quite apart from enjoying the facilities of our fine clubhouse and supporting a great team, Senior Members get a ‘pairty’ in January – a dram when you come in, lunch and an afternoon’s entertainment – all included in the membership fee? Can’t be bad! Visit the Clubhouse, call John Anderson on 01337 857 292, or e-mail secretary@freuchiecricketclub.com

Remember too that the Clubhouse is available for members’ functions, so in addition to our wintertime Prize Bingo Teas (and Patsy threatening to organise steak pie darts and dominos events), this is a great venue for your own parties and celebrations – join us!
